What an honor it is to be a part of the Virginia United States family! I
put my dreams into action and enjoyed every moment of my experience in
beautiful Richmond, Va. I competed with and had the opportunity to get to know
some of Virginia’s finest women, which even further humbled me when
selected as Miss Virginia United States 2011.I can remember the moment right
before crowning being so peaceful and surreal; and then I heard the words, “And
your new Miss Virginia United States 2011 is… Ashley Smith!” Music swelled and
applause erupted from the audience, but all I could think of at the time were
the feelings of shock and gratefulness that overwhelmed me. I knew from that
moment on, my life would never be the same. And almost instantly, things began
to change for me. I’m so excited to take the journey during my year of service
and touch as many lives as I can.An experience I am truly anticipating will be
serving as a goodwill ambassador for the MVAUS Organization’s platform “Rite
Care”; a not-for-profit organization that provides speech, language, fluency,
voice, hearing and auditory processing disorder evaluations and treatment to
children. I also look forward to continuing my service under my personal
platform, “Breast Cancer: It’s Not Just Hereditary”, which promotes education
of breast cancer as an impartial disease and advocates awareness of the fight
to find a cure. There is a Cherokee Expression that says, “When you were born,
you cried and the world rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the
world cries and you rejoice.” I have applied this proverb to my life, and my
year of service under this organization will be no different. I intend to
spread an impactful message throughout the Commonwealth and make the very most
of this unbelievable opportunity.Thank you sincerely to the Miss Virginia
United States Organization for making all of this possible… the journey, and
the dream, has begun! I am and forever will be YOUR Miss Virginia United States
2011 Ashley Smith.
